It is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic and almost complete inert gas that can suffocate at high concentrations. Nitrogen can be produced in large quantities in an air separation unit. If the purity of nitrogen is high, a second step of purification is required. Pressure swing adsorption (PSA) technology is suitable for medium to high purity.
Since the German scientist Carl von Linde successfully separated nitrogen and oxygen by rectifying liquefied air in 1902, nitrogen has been used in a wide range of industries. The low boiling point and low reactivity of -196 ° C make this colorless, odorless and odorless gas popular in a wide range of industrial applications. The principle of separation of liquefied air is that the boiling points of different air components are different. During the countercurrent flow, nitrogen is formed in the gas rise, and oxygen is formed in the liquid drop. This means that gaseous nitrogen accumulates at the top of the lower temperature of the rectification column, while liquid oxygen accumulates at the bottom of the rectification column at a higher temperature.
In the semiconductor industry, nitrogen is used in large quantities as a purge gas and a carrier gas. In the field of electronic products, nitrogen is used as an inert agent for epitaxial growth furnaces. It can also be used as a carrier gas, zero degree calibration gas and balance gas in laboratory analysis. Other common applications include heat treatment, ammonia preparation, fire in mines, tire filling, shrink fit, and cold traps, where nitrogen can help increase vacuum efficiency.
